Blast hangs on to defeat La RaZa, 14-13

Gonzaga records his 2nd hat trick

MONTERREY, Mexico — — Lucio Gonzaga had his second hat trick of the season and the Blast defeated Monterrey La RaZa, 14-13, in a game of momentum shifts Sunday to improve to 2-1.

Gonzaga had three goals and an assist.

Gonzaga, the Major Indoor Soccer League Offensive Player of the Month for November, scored at the 3:28 mark and again at 4:09 to cut La RaZa's lead to 3-2 and then to give the Blast a 4-3 advantage. Captain Robbie Aristodemo scored his first goal of the season at 11:12 to extend the Blast's lead to 6-3.

The visitors scored the first two goals of the second quarter, with Gonzaga recording his third goal of the game and Machel Millwood extending the Blast's lead to 10-3. Victor Quiroz scored for La RaZa with less than 90 seconds remaining in the half to make the halftime score 10-5.

Monterrey (2-2) scored twice to open the second half, slicing the Blast's lead to 10-9 before the visitors answered with two more goals.

In the second game of his career, rookie forward Max Ferdinand scored his first professional goal to put the Blast on top 12-9, and Giuliano Celenza followed less than 30 seconds later, extending the Blast's lead to 14-9. La RaZa's Genoni Martinez ended the quarter with a goal that cut the Blast lead to 14-11.

After 12 scoreless minutes in the final quarter, Mark Ughy scored to put La RaZa within one point, 14-13, and Quiroz came onto the field 20 seconds later as Monterrey's sixth attacker. Sagu and the Blast defense held on for the final 2:36 and emerged with the team's second win ever in Monterrey.
