Chone Figgins needs a position with Seattle Mariners

But he will look good hitting behind Ichiro Suzuki

December 13, 2009|By Phil Rogers

The Mariners know they're going to hit Chone Figgins (above) second, behind Ichiro Suzuki, but they aren't as clear about where they will play him. Third base, replacing Adrian Beltre, seems the likely spot, but he could move to second if they deal Jose Lopez, as is rumored. Left field, where the White Sox considered him, is also a possibility. … It appears teams are starting to take a last shot at re-signing their big-name free agents. The Cardinals made an offer to Matt Holliday, and the Yankees are talking to Johnny Damon (whom they see as a part-time left fielder, part-time DH). The guy most likely to go back to his old team is probably John Lackey. The Angels need him. … The Yankees have stayed out of the Holliday market, but would they change their minds if this round of talks leads nowhere for the Cardinals? A lot of rival executives are suspicious of the Yankees' leaked plans to cut payroll. … Miguel Negron, whom the White Sox re-signed to a minor league contract, had a .500 on-base percentage through 20 games in Puerto Rico. The primary center fielder for Triple-A Charlotte last season, he could get a look as an early season place-holder if Jordan Danks goes to Triple-A, not Chicago. … The Giants' pursuit of Dan Uggla could lead to a move of Freddy Sanchez to third base - or they could sign non-tendered Rockie Garrett Atkins and leave Sanchez at second.
