Council helps Bearcats topple Grand Valley State

Northwest Missouri State running back LaRon Council says he'll never forget the feeling of losing a national championship game.

Now, he has something to take the place of that bad memory.

Council rushed for 172 yards and two touchdowns to lead Northwest Missouri to the NCAA Division II championship with a 30-23 win over Grand Valley State (13-2) on Saturday in Florence, Ala.

The Bearcats (14-1) won their first title since 1998 and ended a string of four consecutive losses in the national title game.

Montana 24, Appalachian State 17: Jabin Sambrano caught a 25-yard touchdown pass from Andrew Selle with 1:31 left, and the host Grizzlies (14-0) survived a last-second rally to beat the Mountaineers (11-3) and reach the Football Championship Subdivision title game. Montana will play Villanova on Friday night in Chattanooga, Tenn.

Mount Union 24, Wesley 7: Cecil Shorts caught a touchdown pass and ran for two scores, leading the host Purple Raiders (14-0) to a win over the Wolverines (13-1) in the Division III semifinals. Mount Union will face Wisconsin-Whitewater in the championship on Saturday in Salem, Va.

Wisconsin-Whitewater 27, Linfield 17: Jeff Donovan completed 17 of 26 passes for 276 yards to lead the host Warhawks (14-0) to a victory over the Wildcats (12-1) in the Division III semifinals.

Prairie View 30, Alabama A&M 24: The Panthers (9-1) rallied with two fourth-quarter touchdowns to beat the Bulldogs (7-5) in the Southwestern Athletic Conference title game in Birmingham, Ala.
