Girls cross country: Coach of the Year

December 10, 2009

Ed Purpura, Severna Park
The Falcons won their third state title in the past five years, but it was an especially sweet victory for Purpura because of how hard the girls worked.

They weren't flashy but stayed together as a pack throughout the season, a big reason top-ranked Severna Park edged Frederick County power Thomas Johnson by six points for the Class 4A title.

First-team All-Metro picks Chris Patrick and Jodie Clouser led the way, along with second-team selection Ashley Hayes. The Falcons had the same top seven all season long.

This was Purpura's fourth state title - he also coached Broadneck to a championship in 1984.
