Boys cross country: Runner of the Year

December 10, 2009

Matt Jablonski, Loyola, junior
He certainly stayed busy this fall, playing varsity soccer and emerging as the cross country team's top runner.

Jablonski started on the Loyola soccer team as a midfielder and also led the Dons to their first Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference cross country title in three years.

His best race might have been the MIAA championship, when he outlasted All-Metro pick Nick Rowe from Calvert Hall to win in 16 minutes, 14 seconds - scoring a three-second victory that helped the Dons win the title by one point over the Cardinals.

Jablonski was the top local finisher at the state private schools meet a week later. He ended up eighth in a difficult field, which paved the way for the Dons to take second overall.

He also took second in the Peter Geraghty Invitational and fourth in the Bull Run Invitational's elite division race at Hereford.
