Eric Atkins scored a game-high 19 points as the No. 3 Mount St. Joseph boys basketball team beat visiting Winters Mill, 84-26, on Wednesday.

Mount St. Joseph led 18-2 after the first quarter and never looked back. Assistant coach Brett Davis credited tough man-to-man defense that limited the Falcons (0-2) to six points in the first half.

Trey Clinton, the 6-foot-5 junior forward who is being recruited by Princeton, had 14 points, and Matt Miller added 13 for the Gaels (6-0).

No. 12 Atholton 71, Howard 62: : Conner Cortes scored 15 points, and Alex Dove and Matt Robinson each had 14 points to lead the visiting Raiders (2-0) past the Lions (0-1).

Atholton led by three points for most of the game, until the final minutes, when they stretched the advantage to 10 through free-throw shooting. Brian Harding had a game-high 23 points for Howard.

Girls basketball

No. 4 Archbishop Spalding 62, Mercy 29: : Raven Makins scored a game-high 14 points to lead the visiting Cavaliers (3-1) past the Magic. Spalding extended its nine-point halftime lead by outscoring Mercy 39-15 in the second half.

No. 9 River Hill 95, Long Reach 33: : Shantrell Oliver and Alex Vega combined to score 45 points, 26 and 19, respectively, to power the host Hawks (1-0) past the Lightning (1-1).

No. 11 Catonsville 54, Overlea 29: : Candace McCray scored a game-high 17 points to power the visiting Comets (3-0) past the Falcons (0-1). Catonsville took an early lead and never trailed.

Howard 55, No. 13 Atholton 41: : The visiting Lions (3-0) - led by April Kuhn's 18 points - maintained a six-point lead using an inside game. Erica Makar led Atholton with 11 points.

Old Mill 67, Southern 57: : Tiara Bolden scored 16 points to power the visiting Patriots (2-0) past the Bulldogs (0-3).
