Mike Preston's Report Card

December 08, 2009|By Mike Preston | Mike Preston , mike.preston@baltsun.com

Quarterback

F

Joe Flacco looked more poised and mobile in the pocket than he has in weeks. He started out slow, but what else is new? He had several passes dropped, one by Todd Heap for a possible touchdown. Those two interceptions at the end were killers.

Offensive line

C

The Ravens have to become tougher, especially in the middle of the line. Left guard Ben Grubbs played an extremely poor first half, and both tackles, Jared Gaither and Michael Oher, struggled in pass protection at times.

Running backs

C-

The Ravens never got untracked. The Packers out-slugged the Ravens at the line of scrimmage, and their running backs didn't have a chance. Flacco has to stop checking down to Rice because teams are on Rice before he gets into the pattern.

Receivers

D

The Ravens didn't get into sync with Flacco until the third quarter, and by then, Green Bay had a 17-0 lead. Heap, a tight end, had seven catches for 41 yards going into the fourth quarter, but a lot of the Ravens' receptions came off busted plays.

Defensive line

C+

Tackles Kelly Gregg and Haloti Ngata shut down the run, and for the most part ends Trevor Pryce and Dwan Edwards kept Aaron Rodgers in the pocket. There were times the Ravens got pressure but couldn't finish because of his quick release.

Linebackers

C+

Ray Lewis, Dannell Ellerbee and Tavares Gooden did a nice job of shutting down the run. Outside linebacker Jarret Johnson was a force as both a run-stopper and pass-rusher, but it wasn't enough against the Packers this night.

Secondary

D

This group is sorry when it has Pro Bowl safety Ed Reed. Without him, the unit is totally lost. The Ravens' cornerbacks can't cover anybody, and they can't tackle. They couldn't do a lot of things against the Packers.

Special teams

C+

The Ravens covered fairly well, and they didn't give up many big plays. Lardarius Webb had another long kickoff return (68 yards) and played well on coverage. For a change, this unit didn't stand out for the wrong reasons.
