ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

December 02, 2009

Josh Furman, Old Mill, football

The senior running back scored a touchdown in the final 20 seconds to lead the No. 1 Patriots to a 20-13 win in a state Class 4A football semifinal Saturday. Furman, 6 feet 3 and 202 pounds, finished with 201 yards and two touchdowns. It was the second time in two weeks he scored a critical touchdown in the final seconds, the previous week forcing the game against then-No. 1 Arundel into overtime before the Patriots won. This season, he has run for 2,272 yards - just 33 shy of the school record. He has scored 31 touchdowns. Furman said he will announce his decision to accept an offer from Michigan or Virginia Tech after he plays in the Maryland Crab Bowl on Dec. 19.

Others considered: : Zach Burkhardt, Eastern Tech, football; Patrick Fitzgerald, Calvert Hall, football; Dominic Harper, Joppatowne, football

Becky Yep, Mount Hebron, cross country

The senior ended a fine career by capturing the Class 3A state championship Nov. 14 at Hereford High, finishing with a time of 20 minutes, 25 seconds to win by 15 seconds over Clarksburg freshman Abigail Daley. Yep, who captured the Howard County championship and also dominated the 3A East regional race, earned first-team All-Metro honors last year after taking second place at the state meet. In addition to cross country, Yep, who is still undecided on a college, is a standout performer in outdoor track for the Vikings, taking fourth at states in the 3,200 meters and seventh in the 1,600. Earlier in her high school career, Yep overcame stress fractures in both tibias.
