Sharen Udell

Glimpsed At Tapas Adela

November 29, 2009|By Sloane Brown | Sloane Brown,Special to The Baltimore Sun

Sharen Udell prefers wearing dark colors, but the hostess at Tapas Adela knows how to make her look stand out with pops of color and unusual accessories. "I'm not a designer person. I don't follow trends," says the 45-year-old Canton resident. "I like to put different stuff together to create my own look."

The look: Red ribbed cotton-blend turtleneck Bebe sweater. Black asymmetrical cotton American Apparel skirt. Black fishnets. Black leather pointy-toe boots. Black rabbit fur pom-pom scarf. Silver ankh earrings.

Where it came from: She got the sweater, skirt and scarf at Fashion Attic. Her boots came from the Aerosoles store. Her earrings were custom-made by a jewelry artist.

Both budget and style matter: "I don't like department store clothing. I'd rather have funky stuff, and sometimes, the boutiques are too pricey for me. ... I love thrift shopping because you can get really funky, unusual things. My current favorite is Fashion Attic. The owner is really, really cool. You can get a lot of designer stuff there that's really inexpensive and a bargain."

She looks to the stars for color cues: "I'm a Capricorn, and we tend to wear darker colors. ... I have a book - 'The Llewellyn Calendar' - it's an astrological calendar that I read every morning. Every day has a certain color. So these colors represent the type of energy I want to utilize for the day."

She prefers unusual, handmade jewelry: "I like unusual accessories. ... I'm a big crystal person. I use crystals a lot for their energy. So, my rings are always handmade, my earrings are handmade and my necklaces are usually handmade, [often] custom made."

Her picks, pans: "I never wear pants with side pockets because they gap. And I never wear baggy pants. Ever. ... I like turtlenecks. They're Parisian. They're very Audrey Hepburn. And I'll put my hair up in a high ponytail with a headband. ... I gravitate to that look; no frills, no flounces. Very clean lines."

Her wardrobe faves: "This rabbit fur scarf. ... My black leather jacket. And my tiny 'takeout' bag. It looks like a [Chinese restaurant's] takeout box, but it's covered in satin and has a bamboo handle."
