Matt Jablonski, Loyola, cross country

The junior won the Jesuit Cross Country Championship on Saturday in Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx, N.Y., in 12 minutes, 55.7 seconds, which is the fastest time posted in that meet since at least 1980. In leading the Dons to a third-place team finish, Jablonski became one of only a handful of runners to come in under 13 minutes in the 60 years the race has been run on the park's 2.5-mile course. He also won the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference title earlier this month and is a four-sport athlete at Loyola. A "B" student, he also played for the Dons' soccer team this fall and runs indoor and outdoor track.

Kourtney Salvarola, Broadneck, volleyball

The senior hitter, a four-year starter, dominated the Class 4A state tournament last week to lead the Bruins to their third straight championship. In Saturday's 25-15, 25-29, 28-26 win over Magruder in the finals, Salvarola had 14 kills and 13 digs - stepping up big late in the third game when the Bruins trailed 18-13. In Wednesday's semifinal win over Urbana, captured in four games, she finished with 14 kills and 17 digs. Salvarola also is a standout softball player and has accepted a scholarship to play that sport at South Florida. Last spring, the pitcher was named the All-Metro Player of the Year after leading the Bruins to the 4A state championship.
