College of Notre Dame cancels rest of season

November 24, 2009|By Sports Digest

College of Notre Dame of Maryland has canceled its 2009-10 season after serious injuries to several members of the team left the roster depleted to the point where continuing to play would put the health and safety of the players at risk, athletic director Michael Spinner said Monday in a statement. Rob Long resigned after three seasons as coach and was replaced on an interim basis by soccer coach and recruiting coordinator Kirsten Russell, a former college basketball player and assistant coach who will oversee the program's administration and recruiting to rebuild the team for 2010-11. Russell was assistant women's coach at Washington College in 2008-09; she was an assistant at Luther, her alma mater, in 2005-06. A national search for a head coach will begin in February.
