The Reservoir girls soccer team made something good happen early in yesterday's Class 3A state championship against Tuscarora, with a goal in the game's third minute.

The other important minutes afterward - the game changers that decide winning and losing - instead went to the Titans from Frederick County.

With two second-half goals from freshman midfielder Holly Kipe, an alert defensive play by senior Brittany Chatfield and a work rate that proved difficult for the Gators to match, Tuscarora came away with a 3-2 win at UMBC Stadium to capture the program's third state title. Reservoir, which rallied with a goal from senior Kelsey Reiff with eight minutes left, closed its season with a 15-4-1 mark.

"It was such an amazing season, what a ride," Reservoir coach Josh Sullivan said. "The amount of work and dedication that they have and not only during the season, but it's the other months - the club teams that they are going to, the captains getting everyone together for runs through the summer to prepare for this. That's the hard work that gets you to this step."

After Payton Bouie gave the Gators a quick lead with a free kick neatly placed from 25 yards, the Titans (15-3-1) persistently pressured and possessed the ball most of the game. They evened the score with 10:17 to play in the half when Michelle Rock scored on an easy rebound in front.

The game's decisive moments came early in the second half.

Reiff had a chance from the left side turned away by Titans goalie Sarah Jo Hayden. The rebound was there in front for senior Stephanie Zaycer, but Chatfield was able to clear the shot off the line to keep the game tied.

The next time the Titans got the ball at the Reservoir end, Kipe finished off a chance in front to give them their first lead with 28:12 to play. Kipe scored her second goal five minutes later.

"I think it did kind of come as a shock because we were possessing and then they got two quick ones. But we didn't give up ... because we scored again and we kept trying. So I'm proud of us for fighting to the end," said Reiff.

Goals: T -- Rock, Kipe 2; R -- Bouie, Reiff. Assists: T -- Marshall. Saves: T -- Hayden 4; R -- Dearden 6. Half: 1-1.
