Glimpsed: Chris Davison

November 15, 2009|By Sloane Brown | Special to The Baltimore Sun

For Chris Davison, art isn't limited to what you might see on the walls of Maryland Art Place, where she is a board member. Art is also what she wears. "I was a buyer for Macy's forever ago. I worked in the garment industry in New York for years. ... I look at fashion as an art form." Davison's fashion background was evident when we "Glimpsed" the 43-year-old Owings Mills resident at MAP's Vanity Affair gala.

The look: Champagne silk Prada dress. Black footless tights. Black patent leather peep-toe Gucci platforms. Long gold four-leaf clover necklace. Four-leaf clover ring. Gold and ivory Luis Morais bracelet. Hermes watch.

Where it came from: She found the dress at Carol Mitchell at Tysons Corner. Her tights came from the Wolford store. Her shoes were bought at Neiman Marcus. Her necklace and ring are from Van Cleef & Arpels. The bracelet was a find at Dresscode by Gita. She bought the watch at Jeffrey in Atlanta.

She likes designer goods: "I'm very aware of cost-to-wear ratio. I will spend money on high-end clothing, if I know that I'll wear it to death. I definitely have pieces that I covet. ... My Balenciaga riding jacket; I got it last fall and it's heavy boiled wool. ... When the weather is suitable, I wear that at least twice a week ... My Birkin bag is like a piece of furniture to me."

Her take on trends: "I jump on very few trends. I feel you have to be very careful that it's age appropriate. ... I love it when I stumble upon a fabulous piece in Zara or BCBG that is on the trendier side, that is inexpensive. ... I'll spend money on things that are chic and cool. At BCBG, I just bought this champagne silk dress that's all silky and drapey - which is so cool - for $148. It's not a lifer, but who cares?"

Her fashion rules: "I wear very little color. I like blacks and neutrals. ... I think that very few women should wear leggings after 40. I'm not a Capri [pants] girl. I have very skinny legs - toothpick skinny. So, I prefer shorter or longer pants; no in-between. I have to try something on. ... If it doesn't work, it doesn't work. I don't force anything ... I hate contrived fashion."

Her fashion icons: "I envy people like Kate Moss. ... Regardless of what she throws on, she always looks so chic and fashionable. She has that innate fashion sense. Audrey Hepburn - her look is clean, chic and can go anywhere."
