A Baltimore County police officer who was shot in the shoulder while responding to a domestic incident Friday evening in Parkville was treated at the Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center and released, according to a police department spokesman.

Bill Toohey said the 30-year veteran, who required surgery, was sent home Saturday. His name was not released.

Police officials also did not disclose the name of the suspect who shot the officer in the 6800 block of Highview Ave. and was then killed by county police officers. Police described the incident as a "gun battle" that followed a call for "a male beating a female individual."

A neighbor, who asked that his name not be used, described noise sounding "like firecrackers in the street." He also said that police officers were going down both sides of the street with their guns drawn and at times hid behind bushes and car doors.
