Today's State Games

October 31, 2009|By Mike Klingaman

Richmond (7-0) at Towson (2-5)

Time: : 1 p.m.

Radio: : 1570 AM

Series record: : Richmond leads 3-2

Last meeting: : Richmond won, 45-14, on Sept. 13, 2008

What's at stake: : This one has all the makings of a horror show. Richmond has won 16 in a row, and the defending national champs sit atop the Football Championship Subdivision poll. The Spiders are poison on the road, where they've won 10 straight. Towson, meanwhile, has been bedeviled by inept play, inexperience and injuries. The Tigers hit bottom last week, falling to Northeastern to end the Huskies' 13-game losing streak. Towson mustered 8 yards rushing in that contest. Coach Rob Ambrose has used five quarterbacks, to no avail. Since it's Halloween, kids dressed in scary costumes will be admitted to the game for $6.

Key matchup: : Richmond QB Eric Ward vs. the Towson defense. Ward is the Spiders' all-time leader in completions and touchdown passes. A senior, he is 37-10 as Richmond's starter.

Players to watch: : Richmond: RB Justin Forte (88 yards a game) is the second-leading rusher in the Colonial Athletic Association. Towson: LB Danzel White has 9 1/2 tackles a game, fifth in the CAA.

Florida A&M (5-2) at Morgan State (5-2)

Time: : 4 p.m.

Radio: : 88.9 FM

Series record: : Florida A&M leads 18-5

Last meeting: : Morgan won, 13-10, on Nov. 1, 2008

What's at stake: : Second place in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, where both teams are 3-1, one game behind undefeated South Carolina State. Morgan hopes to rebound after last week's upset loss to Delaware State, which ended the Bears' five-game winning streak. Was the loss a blip in Morgan's title drive or a portent of what's to come? Florida A&M is the first MEAC team with any muscle to play the Bears this year. The Rattlers have lost only to S.C. State and Miami (Fla.) and are favored, having mauled several schools that gave Morgan fits. The Bears have nipped FAMU two years running, by scores of 13-10 and 14-12. The opposing coaches were once allies: Morgan's Donald Hill-Eley was offensive coordinator at Hampton when Joseph Taylor was head coach there.

Key matchup: : Florida A&M QB Curtis Pulley vs. the Morgan defense. The 6-4 Pulley, MEAC Offensive Player of the Week, has passed for nearly 1,500 yards, tops in the conference, and 10 touchdowns. Morgan's pass defense is No. 1 in the league.

Players to watch: : Florida A&M: KR LeRoy Vann has returned four punts for TDs while averaging more than 20 yards per return. Morgan: K Kemar Scarlett has hit on five of seven field-goal attempts, including a 55-yarder last week.
