Maryland Notebook

DURHAM, N.C. - Maryland, which has suffered a rash of injuries, lost safety Antwine Perez after a tackle at the end of the first quarter. He did not return to the game.

Perez lay on the field after making a hit with his head and shoulders on a pass play. Maryland coach Ralph Friedgen walked out to midfield as Perez was being immobilized and taken out on a stretcher.

The team announced at halftime Perez was alert and not seriously hurt.

The Terps were already playing without starters Nolan Carroll (cornerback), Demetrius Hartsfield (linebacker) and Da'Rel Scott (running back).

Moving on up

Maryland quarterback Chris Turner passed Boomer Esiason on Saturday for second place on the school's career passing list.

Turner, who entered the game with 6,125 yards, needed 135 yards to pass Esiason. He moved past him in the second half.

Scott Milanovich (7,301 yards) is the school's career passing leader.

Welcome back

Punter Travis Baltz returned Saturday after missing three games with a sprained ankle.

Maryland had an able substitute while Baltz was gone. Freshman kicker Nick Ferrara punted 18 times for a 39.7-yard average.

Baltz had also punted 18 times - for a 39.5-yard average - before suffering the injury on a late hit in the loss to Rutgers last month.

Baltz thought he was hit late again on a punt in Saturday's first half, in which he punted twice for a 41-yard average.

He glared and motioned his arms at an official after falling to the turf after the kick. But no penalty was called.

Baltz finished the game with five punts for an average of 40.4 yards. He pinned Duke inside its own 20-yard-line twice.

Uncommon arrival

The Terps bused to and from Saturday's game to save money - a roughly five-hour drive each way.

The Terps have a bye week coming, so the team wasn't in its usual rush to get back to College Park and begin preparing for the next opponent.

This was also the annual game in which many Maryland donors are bused to the game by the university. The donors encountered driving rain as they sat in the bleachers next to the drenched Maryland band.

Last season, donors were bused to Maryland's game at Virginia Tech and watched the Terps lose, 23-13.
