Tuesday night's girls soccer showdown between host No. 5 Arundel and No. 3 Severna Park featured up-and-down play with scoring chances for both teams.
A second chance was needed to decide the outcome.
Midway through the first half, Severna Park junior forward Marisa Kresge scored after following her own shot, and the Falcons' defense held up despite some anxious moments, resulting in a 1-0 win over the Wildcats in Anne Arundel County play.
The Falcons (12-1) improved to 10-0 in the county and clinched a berth in Tuesday's District V championship against the Howard County champion. Arundel fell to 11-2 overall.
Kresge ran on to a through ball from sophomore Gabby Moreno, but her first shot was deflected away by Arundel goalie Ariel Ross. The Wildcats couldn't keep her rebound try out of the net, however.
"We were working on counterattacks during practice, and we were able to get a good push forward," Severna Park coach Todd Clark said.
"Marisa had the opportunity in front of the goal and was able to put it away."
The Wildcats pressed for the tying goal, particularly for the rest of the first half, but the Falcons, led by central defenders Stephanie Pack and Kelly Murphy, wouldn't bend. Sophomore goalie Alexandra Cavey finished with 14 saves.
