Baltimore County Golf is asking for help from golfers throughout the area to help rename the Timonium-based Longview Golf Course. The course is undergoing a $2.9 million renovation. Potential names can be submitted online by visiting BaltimoreGolfing.com/Longview and clicking on the "Submit your idea for a new name" button. Names will be collected through the end of October, and the public can vote for a favorite in November.

Soccer: : Six D.C. United players have been nominated for end-of-the-year Major League Soccer awards. Bryan Namoff was nominated for Defender of the Year. Namoff has started 26 league matches and logged a team-high 2,326 minutes. He also has two goals and four assists this season. Chris Pontius and Rodney Wallace are candidates for Rookie of the Year. Pontius, 22, has played nearly every offensive position on the field, recording seven goals and six assists in 37 games. Wallace (Maryland), 21, has played as both a defender and midfielder, and has recorded three goals and three assists in 27 league games. Defender Dejan Jakovic is up for Newcomer of the Year. Jakovic, 24, signed with United in February and became the starting centerback, playing every minute of all 22 games in which he has played. Midfielder Ben Olsen was nominated for Comeback Player of the Year. Olsen spent a year recovering from a series of ankle surgeries before returning to start 18 of the 19 league games in which he has played this season. Devon McTavish is up for Humanitarian of the Year. Having Crohn's disease himself, McTavish has helped promote the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America (CCFA) and Patient Services Incorporated through a variety of efforts, including donating funds and supporting a CCFA night at RFK Stadium.

Pro football: : The Mariners signed former Maryland offensive tackle Scott Burley (Woodlawn). Burley signed as a free agent with the Washington Redskins this past spring and was released just before the start of the 2009 NFL season.
