Fabulous Strike among 37 De Francis Dash pre-entries

Three of the nation's elite sprinters and the top two local speedsters are among the 37 pre-entries for the $300,000 Frank J. De Francis Memorial Dash on Oct. 24 at Laurel Park. Among the pre-entries for the six-furlong sprint are Fabulous Strike, who has been first or second in five starts (all Grade I or Grade II sprints) in his 6-year-old campaign; Kodiak Kowboy, who has defeated Fabulous Strike in two Grade I stakes this year; Vineyard Haven, who was disqualified from first and placed second in the Grade I King's Bishop Stakes on Aug. 29 at Saratoga; and Laurel Park-based Ravalo and Ah Day, who each have won 10 stakes races. The De Francis, which was not run in 2008 because of a purse account shortfall, is one of Maryland's three Grade I races.

Phelps leads Golden Goggle nominations with six

Michael Phelps has received a leading six nominations for the Golden Goggle awards, including Male Athlete of the Year. Phelps of Baltimore received three individual nods and three for relays. Olympian Ryan Lochte and Ariana Kukors received four nominations each. Phelps, Lochte and Aaron Peirsol were nominated for Male Athlete of the Year. The Coach of the Year ballot includes Bob Bowman of the North Baltimore Aquatic Club. Fans can vote online at GoldenGoggles.com through Nov. 18.

Bannister assists on all 4 goals in Loyola's shutout of Niagara

Phil Bannister assisted on all four goals as Loyola (5-6-1, 2-0-0) earned a 4-0 win against visiting Niagara (4-7-1, 2-1-0) in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. The Greyhounds scored their goals in a 15-minute, 33-second stretch that spanned both halves. Bannister's four assists are tied for the NCAA Division I single-game high this season.

Maryland: : Jason Herrick scored his fifth game-winning goal of the season as the No. 6 Terps (9-3-1, 4-1-1) earned a 1-0 victory at Clemson (2-8-1, 1-4-0). Herrick's team-leading sixth goal of the year came at 13:30.
