Stover Gets Tryout With Colts

Kicker Says He's Sensitive To Feelings Of Baltimore Fans

A week after he worked out for the New York Giants, former Ravens kicker Matt Stover was scheduled to try out for the Indianapolis Colts on Tuesday. Knowing Baltimore's sentiments toward the Colts, Stover wanted to handle his visit delicately.

"I don't want to hurt anybody's feelings with me seeking out an opportunity" here, he said from Indianapolis. "I just see it as a team that may need some help."

After 13 seasons in Baltimore, Stover remains one of the franchise's most popular players with fans. His departure this offseason when his contract expired was met with angst in various parts of the city.

He had an offer to join the Cleveland Browns when they were in Baltimore on Sept. 27, but he declined, saying it wasn't the right fit.

"I'm seeking out my options," he said. "I think I can still kick pretty well."

Stover, 41, ranks third in career field goals made (462) through 19 NFL seasons. He also holds the league record for consecutive games with a field goal, with 38.

The Ravens did not sign him in the offseason because they didn't want to use separate roster spots for a place-kicker and a kickoff specialist, as they did the previous season. Steve Hauschka won the job this season and has made four of five attempts.

Punter Pat McAfee also handles kickoffs for the Colts, which would make the team a good match for Stover.

It's uncertain whether Colts kicker Adam Vinatieri was hurt in Sunday night's win over the Tennessee Titans. A Colts spokesman said the team does not comment on players visiting for a workout.
