Today's State Fcs Games

October 10, 2009|By Mike Klingaman

Towson (1-3, 0-1 CAA) at Rhode Island (1-3, 0-1 CAA)

Time:: 1 p.m.

Radio:: 1570 AM

Series: : Rhode Island leads 5-4.

Last meeting:: Towson won, 37-32, on Oct. 11, 2008.

What's at stake: : The Tigers want to break their 13-game road losing streak. Towson hasn't won away from home since 2007. A victory would also end Towson's six-game losing streak against Colonial Athletic Association teams. Its last CAA win was over Rhode Island on Oct. 11, 2008. Towson is coming off a 57-7 loss to New Hampshire and has been outscored 133-51 this season. Rhode Island has lost three in a row since defeating Fordham. While the Rams have surrendered more points (138) than Towson, they've also forced 18 fumbles - a fact not lost on the Tigers, who've turned the ball over 16 times, including eight last week.

Key matchup: : Towson coach Rob Ambrose vs. Rhode Island coach Joe Trainer. Both are first-year coaches seeking their first CAA win. One of them ought to leave happy.

Players to watch:: Towson: RB Tremayne Dameron. The redshirt freshman has rushed for 301 yards and caught 11 passes, second best on the team. Rhode Island: LB Rob Damon. The cat-quick, 195-pound junior is averaging 13 1/2 tackles, which ranks No. 2 nationally among Football Championship Subdivision players.

North Carolina A&T (3-2, 1-1 MEAC) at Morgan State (3-1, 1-0 MEAC)

Time:: 1 p.m.

Radio:: 88.9 FM

Series: : Morgan leads 38-33-3.

Last meeting:: Morgan won, 41-3, on Oct. 11, 2008.

What's at stake: : Where to start? Morgan's incentives are many: It's Homecoming for the Bears; Morgan has a chance to start 4-1 for the first time in 30 years; and this game pits coach Donald Hill-Eley's team against two former assistant coaches who left last season. Chennis Berry and Alonzo Lee, the Bears' offensive and defensive coordinators, respectfully, departed Morgan for North Carolina A&T. Lee is now the Aggies' head coach, and Berry is his offensive guru. Morgan is off to its best start in decades and goes for its fourth straight win against a team it has defeated in three straight years. The Aggies are pumped, coming off a double-overtime win against archrival North Carolina Central.

Key matchup: : Morgan LB George Howard vs. the North Carolina A&T offensive line. Howard "The Hitman" is the leading tackler among Football Championship Subdivision players and made 17 stops last week - the third straight game for which he was named Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week.

Players to watch:: Morgan: QB Carlton Jackson. While the Bears' running game has sputtered, Jackson has come around, completing 63 percent of his passes with four touchdowns and a passer rating of 124. North Carolina A&T: WR Will Scott. A senior, Scott had his best game last week with five receptions for 179 yards and a touchdown.
