Rice loses in second round of U.S. Mid-Amateur, 5 and 4

Pat Carter, a 12-time West Virginia amateur champion from Huntington, defeated Andrew Rice of Baltimore, 5 and 4, in the second round of the U.S. Mid-Amateur championship at Kiawah Island, S.C. Rice had rallied to win his first-round match, 1-up, over Tyler Shelton of Fairway, Kan.

More golf:: Lisa Schlesinger of Laytonsville won and lost in the second and third rounds, respectively, in the U.S. Women's Mid-Amateur in Ocala, Fla. She defeated Sharon Park of Irvine, Calif., 3 and 2, then lost to Martha Leach of Hebron, Ky., 5 and 4. Jane Fitzgerald of Kensington lost in the second round to two-time champion Meghan Stasi of Oakland Park, Kan., 3 and 2. ... Faber Jamerson, PGA Apprentice general manager at Falling River Country Club in Appomattox, Va., followed up his first-round 3-under-par 69 with a 5-under 67 to take the MAPGA Tournament of Champions by seven strokes at GlenRiddle Golf Club in Berlin in Worcester County.

Men's college soccer:: Luke Goldsborough headed in a rebound of Michael Uyehara's shot 1:48 into overtime to give visiting Navy (6-5-0) a 2-1 victory over Loyola (3-6-1) in a nonconference game. Chris Marino scored for Navy in the 60th minute, and Jamie Darvill tied it less than four minutes later.

Women's college soccer: : Navy senior Shelly Moeller was named the Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week for a conference-record 10th time.

Indoor football: : The Mariners re-signed defensive assistant coaches Jason Blackman (Morgan State) and Bryan Milburn (Maryland, Shepherd) and offensive assistant Ron Meehan (Woodlawn).

Minor league baseball: : Southern Maryland Blue Crabs shortstop Travis Garcia and outfielder James Shanks were named to the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball postseason All-Star team.
