Orioles, Consider This ...

The Offseason

Seven Key Questions Facing The Organization During The Coming Months

October 06, 2009|By Dan Connolly , dan.connolly@baltsun.com

Not much of value that the Orioles would be willing to move. One major league scout who watched the club in September said the only Orioles potentially on the block who would draw interest are Guthrie, Luke Scott and Johnson.

Guthrie is coming off his worst statistical year, and it damaged his trade value. Scott is viewed by many as a DH, limiting his suitors to the AL. Besides, the Orioles couldn't afford to trade Scott's power unless they picked up someone else's.

Johnson is considered an important part of the bullpen's future, no matter the role he is in, so it's hard to imagine he would be actively shopped. Therefore, any trade this winter would likely be considered a minor one - unless they packaged some minor leaguers for a star such as Fielder.

Will they re-sign any of their pending free agents?:

There is mutual interest in keeping Hendrickson around as a reliever and veteran bullpen leader. He made $1.5 million in 2009. Reserve catcher Chad Moeller proved to be a worthy tutor and acceptable backup. Danys Baez and Mora are as good as gone.
