Constellation: Ex-terps Coach Funk Longs For First Win In Home State

October 01, 2009|By Kevin Van Valkenburg , kevin.vanvalkenburg@baltsun.com

Although the 7,160-yard layout isn't particularly forgiving if you miss the fairway, you don't have to have a ton of length off the tee to make birdies here. The previous two winners, Weibring and Loren Roberts, aren't the biggest hitters on tour. But players have to leave the ball below the hole on every green. The knee-knocking pressure of a major championship makes every downhill putt that much more difficult.

"This type of golf course identifies the guys that are playing the best," Funk said. "And that's all I can ask. That's why I love playing the majors so much. ... I feel like there will be about 10 or 15 guys up at the top playing good enough to win, and out of those 15, probably four or five of us [have a chance]. I want to be one of those four or five guys."
