Perry Hall grad Saunders of UMBC named Rookie of Week
For the second consecutive week, UMBC freshman goalkeeper Phil Saunders (Perry Hall) was named Monday the America East Men's Soccer Rookie of the Week. The Retrievers (9-0-0) have the best record in the nation and are ranked 18th in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America poll released Tuesday. Saunders has recorded four consecutive shutouts and five overall. With five shutouts, he is tied with Boston University's Hrafn Davidsson for the league lead. Sophomore forward Andrew Bulls (McDonogh) leads the nation in points per game (3.22) and goals per game (1.33). UMBC opens America East play at Vermont on Saturday.
Football: : Kickoff for Maryland's game at Wake Forest on Oct. 10 was set for 6:30 p.m. The game will not air on TV, but it will be streamed live over the Internet at ESPN360.com. The game will be broadcast by 105.7 FM and 1300 AM. The Terrapins (1-3, 0-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) play host to Clemson (2-2, 1-1) at noon Saturday in their ACC opener before traveling to Winston-Salem, N.C., to face the Demon Deacons (2-2, 0-0). Maryland defeated 21st-ranked Wake Forest, 26-0, last season in College Park and holds a 41-15-1 edge in the series.
Women's basketball: : Towson will host Maryland as part of the 2009-10 season. "The nonconference schedule is highlighted by a visit from the 2005 national champion Maryland Terrapins," Tigers coach Joe Mathews said in announcing Towson's schedule. The Tigers will also host UMBC and Loyola as part of their nonconference schedule. The Retrievers visit Towson on Nov. 24, and the Towson-Loyola game is Dec. 3. Maryland will come to the Towson Center on Dec. 10. It will be the 19th meeting in the series and the first since the 1996-97 season.
Men's basketball: : Navy assistant coach Eugene Burroughs turned down a chance to interview for the head coaching job at Army, the Times Herald Record of Middletown, N.Y., reported. Burroughs, who played at Richmond in the mid-1990s, is entering his fifth year with the Midshipmen. Navy finished second in the Patriot League last year with a 16-14 record, the program's best mark since 2001.
Men's lacrosse: : Senior midfielders Will Harrington (Friends) and Brock Armour, senior defensemen Matt Vetter (Annapolis) and Cameron Zook and senior goalkeeper Rob Wheeler (Friends) have been selected team captains for Towson during the 2010 season.
