Marty West of Rockville and Bobby Morris of Great Falls, Va., recorded first-round victories, but co-medalist Pat Tallent of Vienna, Va., lost in the U.S. Amateur championship at Beverly Country Club in Chicago. West stopped Gray Tuttle of Diamondale, Mich., 3 and 1, and Morris defeated Gary Daniels of Center Valley, Pa., 2 and 1. Tallent, who shared the medal with Paul Simson of Raleigh, N.C., was beaten by two-time champion Kemp Richardson of Laguna Niguel, Calif., 4 and 3.

More golf: : Lisa Schlesinger of Laytonsville won five holes in a row on the back nine to defeat former U.S. Women's Mid-Amateur titlist Martha Lang of Birmingham, Ala., 5 and 4, and Shelley Savage of Alexandria, Va., defeated Beatriz Arenas of Guatemala, 2 and 1, in the first round of the U.S. Women's Senior Amateur at The Homestead in Hot Springs, Va.. ... Drew Forrester two-putted from 15 feet on the second extra hole to thwart Glenn Strunc in the Fall Publinx tournament of the Baltimore Municipal Golf Corporation on Sunday at Forest Park Golf Course. The two had tied at 144 in regulation.

Fishing: : Bryan Schmitt of Deale won the Walmart Bass Fishing League's final Northeast Division tournament of the season on the Chesapeake Bay on Sunday with eight bass weighing 25 pounds, 14 ounces. The victory earned Schmitt $5,126 and helped him qualify for the Potomac River Regional Championship on Oct. 8-10 in Marbury. Schmitt was followed by Allan Engelmeyer of Severn (nine bass, 23-13, $2,563) and John Shumate of Finksburg (six bass, 20-8, $1,709).

Indoor football: : Defensive end Henry Scott (Kenwood, Maryland) re-signed with the Mariners of the American Indoor Football Association.
