Brown-bag discussion

Anne Arundel Community College President Martha Smith and community leaders will hold a panel discussion, "Looking to the Future - Anne Arundel County and Anne Arundel Community College" from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Sept 24 in the Cade Center for Fine Arts, Room 219 on the campus at 101 College Parkway in Arnold. Language classes

Starting this month, the Center for World Languages at Anne Arundel Community College offers comprehensive eight-course sequenced foreign language instruction in nine languages. These no credit, continuing education language series are available in Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish.

The center is offering classes at the Arnold campus and the Arundel Mills facility from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. two nights a week. Depending on the language, sessions run for six weeks, more time is allotted for the Arabic, Chinese, Japanese and Russian courses.

Cost for the French, Spanish, German, Italian and Portuguese courses is $200 each including registration fee. The Arabic, Chinese, Japanese and Russian courses are $275 each, plus registration fees.

Reading screenings

The Summit School, 664 E. Central Ave. in Edgewater, will conduct complimentary reading screenings for grades 1-8 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Oct. 3. Screenings are administered by the school's staff using standardized tests to assess specific reading skills, decoding and comprehension. Screenings take approximately 50 minutes and are used as a tool to indicate whether a child is exhibiting reading or math skill difficulties and does constitute a diagnosis of a reading disability or a specific learning disability.

Scholarships at AACC

The IKO Foundation Inc. has donated $100,000 to scholarship funds at Anne Arundel Community College and contributed to a student emergency fund.

The college plans to award 25 scholarships of $1,000 each toward students' fall and spring tuition.
