Cannon, a promising wide receiver, caught five passes for 30 yards. But he doubtless received a "0" from wide receivers coach Lee Hull on the play on which the touchdown was negated.

Players are scored a "0" for a failed play, a "1" when their effort is successful but flawed, and a "2" for perfection or close to it.

Many of the players come to Gossett, the team headquarters with a dining hall and meeting rooms, on Sunday, their day off, to receive their grades.

"The guys who really care want to know right away," Franklin said. "And most of them want to please their coach."

For all their video reviews and game planning, one of the most important parts of any coach's job is keeping players happy and motivated. The coaches need to know whom to coddle and whom to criticize.

Franklin and Turner even have a rule: no yelling during games. Franklin sits in the coaches' box during games and communicates with his quarterback on the headset.

"If I mess up, I don't need people yelling," Turner said. "I know I messed up. That's just going to make me more upset."
