LOOKING OUT FOR NO. 1: : Both teams lost their season openers on the road to Bowl Championship Series teams: Navy was edged by Ohio State, 31-27, and Louisiana Tech fell to Auburn, 37-13. The Bulldogs gave up 556 yards of total offense, including 301 on the ground, to the Tigers. But Navy coach Ken Niumatalolo was impressed with Louisiana Tech's team speed; there wasn't a big disparity between its players and Auburn's, he said.
MOVING THE BALL: : Navy's offense was effective last week, when it wasn't turning the ball over. The Midshipmen, for the most part, stayed out of third-and-long situations, and as a result converted eight of 12 third downs. They put together two 15-play touchdown drives, of 80 and 99 yards. Louisiana Tech is familiar with the option, having lost at Army last season; plus, defensive coordinator Tommy Spangler spent 10 years as an assistant at Georgia Southern.
SPECIAL SPECIAL TEAMS: : Louisiana Tech makes plays on special teams. The Bulldogs have blocked five punts and five field-goal attempts in the past two seasons, and they have a weapon in Phillip Livas, who has returned two punts and two kickoffs for touchdowns in his career. Niumatalolo compared the 5-foot-8 junior to former Navy standout Reggie Campbell, who had speed, quickness and vision. Livas is also the Bulldogs' top receiver; he had five catches for 43 yards against Auburn.
