Mcdonogh Boys Soccer Team Edges Centennial

Jeremy Kirkwood scored his second game-winner of the week as the top-ranked McDonogh boys soccer team beat Centennial, 2-1, on Friday at the McDonogh Challenge.

In the first game, Archbishop Curley beat Perry Hall, 1-0.

On Wednesday, Kirkwood scored the game-winner in double overtime against No. 2 Mount St. Joseph, and the Eagles (5-0) won 1-0.

Mamadou Kansaye gave McDonogh a 1-0 lead at the 25-minute mark of the first half Friday. Centennial cleared the ball with three minutes left in the game, and McDonogh goalie Matt Sanchez knocked the shot down and was charged with an own goal.

McDonogh won the faceoff, and Kirkwood scored the game-winner with a minute left. Lucas Winters and Jake Weiner each had assists for McDonogh.

"We dominated play but couldn't score," McDonogh coach Steve Nichols said. "Their keeper played well. The conditions were horrible, windy and rainy. And we lacked a little bit of urgency."

The McDonogh Challenge pits private schools against public schools. Today's games will be played at Loyola College with Curley facing Centennial at noon and McDonogh playing Perry Hall at 2 p.m.

No. 2 Mount St. Joseph 2, No. 12 Loyola 0: : Geaton Caltabiano and Joey Isaja scored for the host Gaels. Bratt Benzing had five saves for Mount St. Joseph (3-0).

Football

No. 14 Poly 28, Mervo 12: : Quarterback Antoine Goodson passed for 92 yards and a touchdown and ran for 191 yards and another touchdown for the visiting Engineers (2-0). Poly's Gabriel Ali-El rushed for 111 yards on seven carries and scored two touchdowns.

No. 15 Perry Hall 26, Overlea 8: : Quarterback Davonta Farrell rushed for 85 yards and two touchdowns as the host Gators (1-1) beat the Falcons (0-2). Perry Hall led 26-0 at the half, and Overlea scored with five minutes left in the game.

Digital Harbor 6, Walbrook 0: : Anthony Young had an 80-yard fumble recovery with 10 minutes left in the first quarter to lift the visiting Rams (1-1) over the Warriors (0-2).

Boys' Latin 14, John Carroll 10: : Patrick Steele rushed 25 times for 210 yards to lead the host Lakers (2-0) past the Patriots (1-1) on a rain-soaked field. Boys' Latin fullback Drew White caught four passes for 70 yards. An interception by Michael Turner with two minutes left in the fourth quarter sealed the win. "Our defense was exceptional today," Boys' Latin head coach Ritchie Schell said.

Archbishop Spalding 28, St. Paul's 6: : K.K. Smith rushed 10 times for 160 yards and three touchdowns as the host Cavaliers (2-0) beat the Crusaders (0-2). J.D. Izon added 68 yards on 10 carries for Spalding.

Tuscarora 14, Century 13: : The visiting Knights (0-2) scored twice in the fourth quarter but attempted a two-point conversion and failed, falling to the Titans. Tuscarora's Matt Scott had 14 carries for 100 yards and a touchdown.
