Scouting Report: Yankees Update

September 11, 2009|By Jeff Zrebiec

All eyes will be on shortstop Derek Jeter, who is one hit away from passing Lou Gehrig to become the Yankees' all-time hits leader. Jeter had three hits in New York's 4-2 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays on Wednesday night, giving him 2,721 for his career. Jeter has 267 career hits against the Orioles and is batting .262 against them this season.

Orioles pitchers have had no answer for second baseman Robinson Cano and outfielder Nick Swisher. Cano is batting .474 (27-for-57) with six homers, 17 RBIs and seven doubles in 15 games against the Orioles this season. Swisher hit .400 (16-for-40) in those 15 games, with five homers, 15 RBIs and 12 walks.

The Yankees set a franchise record with seven players reaching the 20-homer plateau, and lead the majors with 219 long balls. While New York's vaunted lineup gets most of the headlines, its bullpen is 14-0 with a 3.02 ERA since Aug. 5.

The Yankees have beaten the Orioles 10 straight times, matching their longest single-season winning streak against them. Overall, the Yankees have won 27 of their past 33 games against American League East opponents and have a 40-13 record since the All-Star break.
