Baltimore Lawyer Who Served In The Pacific During World War Ii Was Active In Veterans Affairs For Nearly 50 Years

For many years, Mr. Sloan had been chairman of the Selective Service System in Baltimore and was awarded the Meritorious Service Award and received certificates of appreciation from Presidents Richard M. Nixon and Gerald R. Ford.

For more than 25 years, Mr. Sloan had served as executive director of the Maryland Society for Crippled Children and Adults Foundation Inc.

In 1986, President Ronald Reagan sent Mr. Sloan a letter of appreciation for his years of civic and fraternal work.

Mr. Sloan, who also lectured in adult evening classes at Loyola College and at the American Legion Boys State Program for many years, was a past president of the Western Maryland Society and had served as its secretary for 25 years.

The former Hamilton resident, who had lived at Winthrop House for 30 years, was a member of the Baltimore Country Club.

An avid world traveler, he had visited all seven continents and more than 150 countries, family members said.

A longtime Orioles fan, he enjoyed collecting baseball memorabilia.

He was a communicant of the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer.

His wife of 36 years, the former Peggy Sorensen, died Aug. 21.

Services for Mr. Sloan were held Wednesday at the Mitchell-Wiedefeld Funeral Home in Rodgers Forge.

Surviving are a stepdaughter, Marta Hartman Campbell of Baltimore; two granddaughters; and a great-granddaughter.
