Lewis survives Browns cut; Steelers let Redman go

Former Ravens running back Jamal Lewis, who was believed to be in danger of not making the team's opening-week roster, survived the Cleveland Browns' final cuts Saturday. An impressive training camp by rookie James Davis and Lewis' average of just 2.6 yards on 24 carries during the NFL preseason fueled speculation that Lewis, 30, who has eclipsed 10,000 career yards, might be among the players dropped. "Jamal has lot to contribute, and I'm looking forward to seeing him as we go through the season," Eric Mangini, the team's first-year coach, said. "He's a physical guy. He's a tough guy. He's a good pro, and he has been a good mentor to the younger backs."

Steelers: : Running back Isaac Redman, a nondrafted rookie who was the surprise star of training camp, was among 21 players cut. Redman, who played at Bowie State, scored three of Pittsburgh's five rushing touchdowns during the preseason and had a team-leading 145 yards. The Steelers will add Redman to their practice squad if he is not claimed on waivers.

Major League Soccer: : Jaime Moreno's penalty-kick goal in the 58th minute lifted visiting D.C. United to a 2-2 tie with FC Dallas on Saturday night. The draw moved D.C. (7-5-12) into a five-way tie for the final three playoff spots, while Dallas (6-11-6) - which squandered two leads - watched its postseason hopes fade further. Moreno's seventh goal of the season and 129th of his career, adding to his MLS record, followed a red card issued to Dallas defender Daniel Torres.
