Consider: What If Dick Cheney Is Right?

September 04, 2009|By Douglas MacKinnon

One of President Barack Obama's favorite quotes - which is attributed to Albert Einstein - wisely reminds us, "Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results."

Some on the far left and some in the media prove Einstein's point on a daily or weekly basis with their continuous assaults against former Vice President Dick Cheney and his single-minded desire to protect our nation from nuclear, biological or chemical attack at the hands of terrorists. The latest onslaught from the left against Mr. Cheney has come because he dares to vocalize that Central Intelligence Agency interrogators actually protected our nation from additional terrorist attacks. These liberals apparently believe that if they ceaselessly level charges against Mr. Cheney, the jihadists will pat them on the back, magically abandon their deeply ingrained and twisted beliefs and all will be right with the world.

Leaving aside the reams of evidence offered up by the terrorists themselves to the contrary, the more serious-minded on the left - and there are many - need to separate themselves from the haters and ask, "What if Dick Cheney is right?"

As reported elsewhere, Aaron Friedberg, a former foreign policy adviser to Mr. Cheney, said the former vice president believes "that many people find it very difficult to hold that idea in their head, really, and conjure with it, and see what it implies." To that, I say if there is anyone in the Obama White House or our intelligence agencies who "finds it very difficult to hold that idea in their head" and "see what it implies," they need to resign immediately. Their job is to not only hold the idea but to embrace it and know exactly what it implies: the death of tens of thousands of innocent Americans.

The health-care debate? Cash for clunkers? Rising unemployment? None of that will matter if we lose an American city to terrorism. An intelligence operative told me that if terrorists successfully detonate a nuclear weapon on our soil and kill and wound hundreds of thousands of Americans, "the thin veneer of civilization will be ripped from our nation in an instant, and we could very well descend into barbarism. Neighbor against neighbor as we fight to survive in a country where government ceased to function and law and order became of thing of the past."
