'An Evening with Brooks' set for Meyerhoff Oct. 26
The Babe Ruth Museum's fall gala will celebrate Hall of Fame third baseman Brooks Robinson. "An Evening with Brooks" will take place Oct. 26 at 6 p.m. at the Meyerhoff Symphony Hall. There will be a cocktail reception, tributes to Robinson from special guests and a silent auction. Tickets are $105 for the cocktail reception and program or $55 for the program only. Youth broadcasting: : The ESPN Zone and Orioles are giving the next generation of sports announcers their first crack at the big leagues during ESPN Zone's Junior Broadcaster competition on Thursday at 6 p.m. at the restaurant. Children 12 and under will have the opportunity to showcase their announcing skills on one of four Orioles plays. The Junior Broadcaster competition will begin at 6 p.m. at the downtown ESPN Zone. Orioles broadcasters Tom Davis and Jim Hunter will provide feedback for the children and select four winners, who will earn a VIP experience in the broadcast booth at Camden Yards. Men's college soccer: : Forwards Andrew Bulls (McDonogh) and Levi Houapeu had a goal and an assist apiece, leading host UMBC over Virginia Tech, 3-1, in the opening match for both teams. Sean Rothe (Archbishop Curley) had the Retrievers' other goal. Freshman Phil Saunders (Perry Hall) made three saves for UMBC. ... Forward Ibrahim Kamara scored two goals in the second half as Rutgers overcame a two-goal halftime deficit to earn a 4-3 nonconference victory over host Towson in the season opener for both teams.
Towson football: : Sophomore defensive back Josh McCants has been suspended from the team for two weeks because of a violation of team rules, coach Rob Ambrose said. McCants, who played 12 games as a reserve linebacker last season, will be eligible for reinstatement Sept. 14. The Tigers will open their season Saturday at Northwestern.
Ravens: : Ian Eagle and Rich Gannon will call the season opener on CBS against the Kansas City Chiefs on Sept. 13.
Redskins: : Linebacker London Fletcher will have a minor procedure to inject medicine into his foot and will miss Thursday's final preseason game against the Jaguars. Coach Jim Zorn said Fletcher had a similar procedure last year. Fletcher is expected to recover in time for the regular-season opener Sept. 13.
Women's college basketball: : Mount St. Mary's hired Jada Pierce and Lisa Steele as assistant coaches. Pierce was an assistant the past two seasons at Massachusetts, and Steele graduated this season from George Washington.
