Top Prosecutor To Handle Solicitation Case

Baltimore County's top prosecutor will handle the case of a Middle River soccer coach charged with solicitation of child pornography, sexual solicitation of a minor and distribution of obscene matter to a minor.

Court documents say Charles Louis Friedel, 33, attempted to meet a 14-year-old girl at a convenience store for sex.

Friedel was arrested in July after police detectives assumed the identity of the 14-year-old girl and arranged a meeting. Friedel faces an additional charge filed Wednesday by prosecutors.

Baltimore County State's Attorney Scott D. Shellenberger will prosecute the case, which was moved Wednesday to Circuit Court.

"I used to be head of the child-abuse unit," Shellenberger said. "I have a tremendous interest in these ... cases."

Police say they were contacted July 6 by the girl's father about inappropriate text messages sent from Friedel's phone to his daughter. An undercover detective posed as the girl and began exchanging text messages with Friedel, police said.

Court documents show that Friedel sent sexually explicit pictures of himself and asked the girl to send pictures of her private areas.

He later attempted to meet the girl at a Royal Farms store, according to police.
