* The Columbia Orchestra will hold auditions 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. today and 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Monday at Christ Episcopal Church, 6800 Oakland Mills Road. Call 410-465-8777, ext. 4, or e-mail join@columbiaorchestra.org.

* Silhouette Stages (formerly Shadow Block Productions) will hold auditions for a cast of 18 to 30 actors, singers and dancers ages 16 and older, for its production of "Sugar," a Broadway musical based on the screenplay of the film "Some Like it Hot." The play is about two musicians who are witnesses to a murder and are forced to hide from the bad guys by disguising themselves as women and joining an all-female orchestra. Auditions will be held at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Dance Foundations, 8940 Route 108. Performances will be Oct. 16-25 at Slayton House Theatre, 10451 Twin Rivers Road in Wilde Lake. Battle of the Bands

The Columbia Association Teen Advisory Committee and Courtesy on Road sponsors Battle of the Bands from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at the Other Barn, 5851 Robert Oliver Place. Bands will compete by performing three songs: an original of the band's choice, a cover title and a new composition to promote Courtesy on the Road. Call 410-715-5523 for more information.

Dance open house

Kinetics Dance Theatre will hold an open house from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday for the coming school year. Among the classes being offered are ballet, jazz, modern dance, hip-hop, musical theater and creative dance. There are also classes for children with special needs and for boys only. Photography exhibit

The work of Jim Mitchell, "The World of Carnival," will be on display through Aug. 31 in the Lakeside Coffee & Cafe, American City Building, 10227 Wincopin Circle. Hours are 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Mondays-Fridays and 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturdays.

Around town

Single again : Changing Focus/Single Again, a nonprofit program for adults who are separated, widowed or in the process of divorce, provides weekly presentations and small-group discussions in a confidential, comfortable atmosphere. The group meets at 7 p.m. Mondays at First Presbyterian Church, 9325 Presbyterian Circle. An orientation for new members is offered at 6:30 p.m. A social worker meets with the group, which breaks into smaller groups to discuss the topic of the week. Chair yoga : The East Columbia 50 Plus Center at the East Columbia library, 6600 Cradlerock Way, will offer "Chair Yoga," an easy introduction to yoga that helps to ease the pain of arthritis, reduce fatigue and improve circulation and breathing, 10 a.m. Tuesdays. Other classes include jewelry making, exercise, belly dancing and tai chi.
