Preseason Win Pretty, But It's Not Prelude

August 15, 2009|By Peter Schmuck

News item: : The Ravens passed for more than 400 yards and crushed the Washington Redskins, 23-0, in the first preseason game of 2009 on Thursday night at M&T Bank Stadium.

My take: : If you think that was a preview of the regular season, you're going to be disappointed, but I didn't hear any Ravens fans complaining that they didn't get their money's worth - even at regular-season prices.

News item: : Michael Vick has signed a one-year contract (with an option for 2010) to play for the Philadelphia Eagles, and he told reporters Friday he's looking for a fresh start.

My take: : From a legal standpoint, the guy has paid his debt to society - and done a better job of that than, say, Donte' Stallworth - but it would be naive to think he'll ever be able to put his tawdry dogfighting scandal completely behind him.

News item: : Ravens linebacker-defensive end Terrell Suggs remains sidelined with an Achilles tendon injury.

My take: : I feel his pain. No, really, I literally feel his pain.

News item: : San Diego Padres first baseman Adrian Gonzalez went 6-for-6 on Tuesday night, becoming only the fourth major league player to get six hits in a nine-inning game.

My take: : Now, there's a guy who would look really good with Baltimore across the front of his road jersey. Just sayin'.

News item: : Tiger Woods has not backed away from his criticism of PGA official John Paramor for invoking a time limit on Woods and Padraig Harrington during Sunday's final round of the Bridgestone Invitational.

My take: : Don't blame him. The decision to put them "on the clock" made little sense, since they were the final group and nobody was playing behind them ... unless the pressure was coming from the TV truck.

News item: : Professional sports teams are trying to figure out how to handle the growing popularity of Twitter among players, and the proliferation of fraudulent sites that purport to belong to high-profile athletes and other celebrities.

My take: : I love Twitter, because it allows you to communicate on a totally superficial level with lots of people who you don't really want to know much about anyway.

Bonus take: : Sorry, that last take cut off right after the word "want" because it was 165 characters. My bad.

News item: : Terrell Owens' new reality show on VH1 drew 1.2 million viewers for its debut recently, which sounds pretty good until you consider that it ranked 798th among cable shows for its opening week.

My take: : I'm sure that after T.O. gets in the face of the show's producer and tells him how to do his job better, the ratings will shoot right up.

News item: : Red Sox star Kevin Youkilis was suspended for five games for charging the mound and igniting a brief brawl between Boston and the Detroit Tigers.

My take: : That should be just enough time to get over the embarrassment of being body-slammed by Tigers rookie pitcher Rick Porcello.

News item: : Cincinnati Reds pitcher Bronson Arroyo all but outed himself as one of the names on the infamous list of 104 positive drug tests from baseball's 2003 steroid survey, and voiced no regrets over using supplements - including the pseudo-steroid androstenedione - during the steroid era.

My take: : I think he just felt left out because he wasn't mentioned in the Mitchell Report.

News item: : Pedro Martinez defeated the Chicago Cubs in his 2009 major league debut for the Philadelphia Phillies on Wednesday.

My take: : Martinez, 37, replaced Jamie Moyer, 46, in the Phillies starting rotation, and you're questioning Andy MacPhail's youth movement?

News item: : The Chicago White Sox claimed Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Alex Rios off waivers and assumed the estimated $60 million remaining on the $69 million deal he signed in 2007.

My take: : The Jays were happy to get nothing in return for a good player, and they would have thrown Vernon Wells into the deal if the Sox wanted to pay him, too. I think the next step is for J.P. Ricciardi to call Andy and ask for a copy of "The Plan."
