Deadline for juried show submissions extended

The deadline for photograph submissions for the show "Local Lens: Images of South County and the Bay" at the Capt. Salem Avery Museum, 1418 E. West Shady Side Road, has been extended to Sept. 13. Photographs should focus on South County or the Chesapeake Bay, be at least 8 inches in one dimension, been taken this summer, and be framed or matted. Adults, children and professional photographers can submit up to three pictures. No fee. For details and entry forms, call 410-867-4486.

County fair vendors

The Anne Arundel County Fair is accepting merchandise and service type vendor applications for this year's fair, scheduled for Sept. 16-20 at the Anne Arundel County Fairgrounds in Crownsville. Fees start at $250 for outdoor and $395 for indoor space. No food vendors accepted.

Volunteer hall of fame

Nominations are being accepted for the Volunteer Project Hall of Fame Awards, given to honor volunteer projects that have the most impact in Anne Arundel County and Annapolis.

Volunteer projects sponsored by local nonprofits or faith-based organizations, local businesses, government agencies and other groups are eligible.

Nomination forms are available online at volunteerannearundel.org or call 410-897-9207. Deadline is Oct. 19.

Award winners will be announced on Nov. 6 during the Induction Luncheon Celebration at the Loews Annapolis Hotel, 135 West St. in Annapolis.

Musical director needed

Children's Theatre of Annapolis seeks a director for its spring production of "Willy Wonka Jr." which is scheduled to be performed in March. Age group of the performers is 8 to 14 years old. Fire protection project

A road construction project along River Valley Chase Road near Route 32 is under way. The project involves minimal clearing and excavation to provide for the installation of a 30,000-gallon underground water storage tank for fire suppression. It is expected to be completed by mid-September.

There may be delays along River Valley Chase Road during the hours of 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Mondays-Fridays. For questions or concerns about the project, call 410-313-3440 or e-mail publicworks@howardcountymd.gov.

Philanthropist nominations

The Community Foundation of Anne Arundel County seeks nominations for its Philanthropist of the Year Award. This award is presented to an individual or family with a record of exceptional generosity. The foundation also seeks nominations for its Volunteer of the Year and Youth Philanthropist of the Year awards. Deadline for nominations is Sept. 11. Call 410-280-1102 for more information.

Summer hours

The Banneker-Douglass Museum, 84 Franklin St. in Annapolis, is operating on its summer schedule. Hours remain in effect through Sept. 6:

Sundays: 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Mondays and Tuesdays: closed.

Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Thursdays: 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Historic house tours

The Ann Arrundell County Historical Society has opened the historic Benson-Hammond House and North Browse and Buy Shoppe at Aviation Boulevard and Andover Road in Linthicum for the season. Tours are 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursdays-Saturdays. Group tours are given by appointment.

The house and outbuildings interpret the agricultural heritage of northern Anne Arundel County.

The Kuethe Library for Historical and Genealogical Research at 5 Crain Highway S.E., operated jointly with the Anne Arundel Genealogical Society, is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday through Saturday year-round.
