Camp Highlights

August 07, 2009|By Edward Lee

SETTING THE TONE: : The defense opened the morning session when defensive tackle Haloti Ngata tipped and intercepted a pass by Joe Flacco on the first play of a full-team, live drill. Cornerback Domonique Foxworth intercepted a pass from Flacco to wide receiver Marcus Smith, and cornerback Frank Walker broke up several passes.

NEAR MISS: : Cornerback Fabian Washington appeared to join the interception parade when he got his hands on a pass from Flacco to wide receiver Justin Harper during a one-on-one exercise, but the ball squirted out of Washington's hands and into Harper's. An incredulous Washington lay on the turf for a few seconds.

CATCH (AND PASS) OF THE DAY: : Harper perfectly timed a leap over rookie cornerback Lardarius Webb to catch a 35-yard pass and race the remaining 55 yards to the end zone. The pass from John Beck was equally exquisite, and coach John Harbaugh singled out Beck afterward for several fine throws.

GETTING AIR: : In addition to Beck's touchdown pass, all three of the offensive scores came through the air, with Flacco tossing one to wide receiver Kelley Washington and one to running back Willis McGahee, and Troy Smith connecting with Harper.

GETTING A LEG UP: : A day off didn't seem to help rookie Graham Gano, who made five of seven field-goal tries, sailing a 40-yard attempt wide left and clanging a 54-yarder off the left post. Steve Hauschka converted all five of his attempts.

: OVERHEARD: : "I told you your hands were no good." - Derrick Mason, wide receiver, chiding Fabian Washington after a pass went through the cornerback's hands and into Harper's. :
