Football and cheerleading
The Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks is accepting registrations for Warhawks flag and tackle football and cheerleading.
Flag football for ages 5-6 is $85; tackle football, ages 7-14, is $160; cheerleading, ages 5-14, is $125. Practices are held at Mount View Middle School, 12101 Woodford Drive in Marriottsville.
Tackle football participants are placed on teams based on age and weight.

Hospitality industry open house
Anyone interested in starting or advancing a career in the hospitality industry can attend a free culinary or hospitality open house at Howard Community College, 10901 Little Patuxent Parkway in Columbia. The hotel and restaurant management session will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday. There will be a light lunch and gift for all participants. To register and for more information, call 410-772-4469.
Supplies needed
The program Prepare for Success, sponsored by the Community Action Council of Howard County, raises funds to purchase backpacks and collects donations of school supplies from around the county. Donors will be able to drop off pencils, paper, scissors, rulers, crayons, notebooks and other supplies through Aug. 28 at boxes throughout the county, including the Columbia Village Centers, all library branches, Columbia Association gyms, the George Howard Building and the Columbia Gateway Building. Safety brochure
"Howard Transit-Safety Guidelines for Bus Passengers," available in English and Spanish, provides guidelines on boarding and exiting buses, location of emergency equipment, safety features, drivers' and passengers' responsibilities and emergency contact numbers. Brochure can be picked up from any Howard Transit bus driver or by calling 800-270-9553.
Vendors wanted
Vendors and exhibitors are wanted for Howard County's 50+EXPO, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 16 at Wilde Lake High School, 5460 Trumpeter Road. This year's event features a health fair, health screenings, workshops, live entertainment and food. Fees for vendors vary and are based on category and location.
