Md. Universities To Lose 175 Positions, Trim $37.8 Million

That would be a welcome change, though not a cure-all, Farvardin said.

"I believe we've reached the point where a modest increase would be fully justified," said the provost at College Park. "It's a very delicate issue, because many students are struggling with costs. But we could take some of the revenue and place it in a pool for financial aid. It would be best for everyone."

Cuts are to the University System of Maryland operating budget and do not reflect cuts to the system's cash reserves.

University of Maryland, College Park: $7.38 million

University of Maryland, Baltimore: $2.19 million

Towson University: $1.62 million

University of Maryland, Baltimore County: $1.6 million

Salisbury University: $0.71 million

Coppin State University: $0.68 million

Frostburg State University: $0.60 million

University of Maryland Eastern Shore: $0.58 million

University of Baltimore: $0.55 million
