High sustained winds and rain damaged homes in Finksburg and knocked out power Friday afternoon to more than 40,000 Baltimore Gas & Electric customers in Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Carroll, Harford and Howard counties. Sinai Hospital in the city was one of the customers affected.

Three homes in the 2900 block of Constellation Way of the Star View Estates community near Gamber were condemned after significant damage to roofs and structures, and several nearby homes were also damaged, said Brian Horton, spokesman for the Carroll County Sheriff's Office.

Two of the three condemned homes are uninhabitable, he said.

One woman injured her right arm when she was securing her garage door, Horton said.

Based on preliminary reports, power outages peaked at about 5 p.m. with about 42,000 customers out of service, said BGE spokeswoman Linda Foy. By 7 p.m., nearly 25,000 were waiting for power to be restored, according to BGE's Web site.

At Sinai Hospital, emergency generators kicked in to power critical functions when the electricity went out about 3:30 p.m., said spokeswoman Jill Bloom. Power was restored at about 5:20 p.m., she said.

Sinai took no new patients and postponed the start of surgeries until receiving the go-ahead from BGE, Bloom said.
