My Best Shot

William Hollifield

July 26, 2009

I live in Lutherville and last September I visited the Isle of Man. I arrived in Douglas, the capital city, on a perfect sunny day to begin a five-day visit. Walking along the promenade opposite the harbor, I saw the horse trams which have been operating since 1876. Each open-sided car is pulled by a single large horse which has a 2-hour tour of duty. This photo shows the end of the day when the roles are reversed as the horse stands idly watching as three men push the tram into the car barn. I thought there would be plenty of time to ride one of these trams in the coming days, but as it turned out, it was the last day of the season. The horse probably did not realize it, but he was going to be "off duty" until next spring.
