Deadline for juried show submissions extended

Deadline for photograph submissions for the show Local Lens: Images of South County and the Bay at the Capt. Salem Avery Museum, 1418 E. West Shady Side Road, has been extended to Sept. 13. Photographs should focus on South County or the Chesapeake Bay, be at least 8 inches in one dimension, been taken this summer, and be framed or matted. Adults, children and professional photographers can submit up to three pictures. No fee. For details and entry forms, call 410-867-4486.

Philanthropist nominations

The Community Foundation of Anne Arundel County seeks nominations for its Philanthropist of the Year Award. This award is presented to an individual or family with a record of exceptional generosity. Foundation also seeks nominations for its Volunteer of the Year and Youth Philanthropist of the Year awards. Deadline for nominations is Sept. 11. Call 410-280-1102 for more information.

Gardening classes

The Anne Arundel County Master Gardeners will hold a series of free vegetable gardening classes for beginning gardeners. All classes are held at 7 p.m. at St. Margaret's Church, 1601 Pleasant Plains Road in Annapolis.

"Harvesting and Storing Vegetables" will be offered Tuesday. Information: 410-222-6757.

Temporary driving range

Golfers at Fort Meade can hit balls at a temporary driving range adjacent to McGlachlin Parade Field.

New 12-lane range takes the place of the original, which was removed to make way for construction this year and is open for walk-on use from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekends. Veterans are eligible to play with a copy of their DD214, which they have to bring only once to be able to play all season.

There is also a tax-free pro golf shop.

Summer hours

The Banneker-Douglass Museum, 84 Franklin St. in Annapolis, is operating on its summer schedule. Hours remain in effect through Sept. 6:

Sundays: 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Mondays and Tuesdays: closed.

Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Thursdays: 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Youth sports fall sign-up

Historic house tours

The Ann Arundel County Historical Society has opened the historic Benson-Hammond House and North Browse and Buy Shoppe at Aviation Boulevard and Andover Road in Linthicum for the season.

Tours are 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursdays-Saturdays. Group tours are given by appointment.

The house and outbuildings interpret the agricultural heritage of northern Anne Arundel County.

The Kuethe Library for Historical and Genealogical Research at 5 Crain Highway S.E., operated jointly with the Anne Arundel Genealogical Society, is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday through Saturday year-round.
