Scouting Report: Red Sox Update

July 24, 2009|By Jeff Zrebiec

Boston is just 1-5 since the All-Star break and has lost five straight games, including a three-game sweep at the hands of the Texas Rangers.

After leading the American League East for much of the first half, the Red Sox are now two games behind the surging New York Yankees. Seeking to jump-start the offense, Boston acquired first baseman Adam LaRoche on Wednesday. It would help if outfielder J.D. Drew broke out of an extended slump.

He's hitless in his past at-bats, his average dropping to .233. Designated hitter David Ortiz is no longer one of the Red Sox's biggest problems, as he has 11 homers and 33 RBIs since June 1 after collecting only one homer and 18 RBIs through the end of May.

The Orioles are 6-25 at Fenway Park since the start of the 2006 season, including 0-4 this year.
