Columbia teen arrested in assault linked to shooting

Howard County police have arrested a 17-year-old Columbia boy, charging him with assault in an incident that led to a shooting near a basketball court. The teenager, who was not identified, was charged as a juvenile with assaulting a still-unidentified male, who in turn shot Keontae Johnson, 18, of Columbia, on July 9. Johnson was taken to Maryland Shock Trauma Center and was later released, police said. Police are offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to an arrest in the shooting.

FOR THE RECORD - An article in Friday's editions misstated whom a 17-year-old boy is accused of assaulting. The unnamed juvenile, who is charged with second-degree assault, is accused of hitting Keontae Johnson, who was later wounded by an unidentified gunman near a Columbia basketball court July 9.
The Baltimore Sun regrets the error.

Husband and wife charged in 14 Carroll Co. burglaries

State police say they've arrested a husband and wife who stole thousands of dollars' worth of goods and property from homes around Carroll County. Jerome Herron, 41, of Westminster has been charged in 14 burglaries committed between April and July. His wife, 34-year-old Tina Herron, was charged in six burglaries committed last October and this May. State police say the Herrons would break windows, pry open sliding-glass doors or simply enter homes through unlocked doors. They're accused of stealing jewelry, power tools, cash, prescription drugs, guns and electronics. Police say the Herrons sold some of the items and kept others for themselves. Jerome Herron was arrested earlier this month shortly after a burglary in Sykesville. Tina Herron was arrested Tuesday at the couple's home.
