July 24, 2009|By Frederick N. Rasmussen

Herbert Ray "Speedy" Kennedy, a retired Lehigh Portland Cement Co. electrician and an avid outdoorsman, died Monday of complications from colon surgery at Frederick Memorial Hospital. The Union Bridge resident was 81.

Mr. Kennedy, the son of a Portland Cement Co. heavy equipment operator and a homemaker, was born and raised in Union Bridge.

After graduating from Elmer A. Wolfe High School in 1945, he enlisted in the Navy and served in Cuba and Panama aboard the submarine tender USS Orion.

In 1945, he went to work in the laboratory of Lehigh Portland Cement in Union Bridge, and later became an electrician. He retired in 1990.

Mr. Kennedy got the nickname "Speedy" from his fellow workers.

"He had to punch the clock at work, and he'd wait until 7:59 a.m. to do it, which caused his co-workers to say, 'Here comes Speedy,' " said his wife of 60 years, the former Maxine "Pat" Fair.

"He was always the last one to punch in," Mrs. Kennedy said, laughing.

He had been an active member and president of the Lehigh Portland Cement Employees AFL-CIO Local 31.

He was a member of the Glenn W. Eyler American Legion Post in Woodsboro and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8806.

Mr. Kennedy was also a member of the Maryland Saltwater Sportsman Association. He enjoyed crabbing on the Eastern Shore and hunting and fishing in the Mid-Atlantic region.

Mr. Kennedy was a member of St. James Lutheran Church in Union Bridge.

A memorial service for Mr. Kennedy will be held at 11 a.m. today at the Hartzler Funeral Home, 6 E. Broadway, Union Bridge.

Also surviving are a son, Jay F. Kennedy of Union Bridge; three daughters, Vicki Kennedy of Inwood, W.Va., Donna Brosnan of Eldersburg and Patti Hare of Westminster; a sister, Frances Coleman of Salisbury; 10 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
