What's The Deal?

Are you using Twitter to get the best twavel deals?

While it sounds like a tongue-twister, this social networking craze has tongues wagging about discounts and offers available only to those who follow airlines, hotels or other travel providers on Twitter. If you're serious about saving money on travel, this is the place to be - for the moment.

For example, last week JetBlue began "tweeting" flights as low as $9 each way to its followers. United Airlines offers sale "twares" to its followers. Marriott hotels was tweeting a 24-hour only "deal of the day" recently to promote a 60 percent savings at select hotels.

It's also helpful for planning: BWI Marshall Airport tweets airport delays, status and weather on a regular basis each day.

Some folks are still figuring out Facebook, so jumping to Twitter may seem premature, but it's really easy and free. All you have to do is sign up and then select who you will "follow" - airlines, hotels, cruise lines, visitor bureaus, travel agents, etc. (You can follow me at twitter.com/suntravelblog.)

If you're looking for specific information or are planning a trip, use the hash tag (#symbol) to look for #travel or #traveldeals or #lasvegas.

In addition to savings, the site may even help if you have a travel issue that needs to be solved quickly.

The New York Times wrote last week about how some travelers are using Twitter to get quick and direct response from airlines and hotels.

I don't think Twitter replaces doing your own research or calling customer service, but it can be a very valuable tool for travelers.
