Discount tickets

The Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks, through the Maryland Recreation Parks Association, is offering discount tickets to area theme and water parks. Tickets are for one-day visits and in some cases, season passes, to Busch Gardens, Six Flags Great Adventure and Six Flags America, Water Country USA, Kings Dominion, Dorney Park, Hershey Park, Dutch Wonderland and Sesame Place. Social Networking tools

"Social Networking Tools: Twitter, Facebook and Linkedin for Business" will be held from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Center for Business and Technology Development, 9250 Bendix Road, North, Columbia. Adult basketball leagues

The Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks is accepting registrations for its fall basketball leagues. Play begins Sept. 6. The $570 fee includes an eight-game regular season schedule, single-elimination playoffs, game officials and awards. Registration deadline is Aug. 21; teams that register before Aug. 7 receive a 5 percent discount. Men's leagues are on Sunday mornings and Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday or Friday evenings. Men's over 30 league runs Tuesday evenings. Women's league play takes place Thursday evenings and the co-rec league on Wednesday evenings. Housing program

The Howard county Department of Housing and Community Development is taking applications for the July enrollment period for the county's moderate income housing unit (MIHU) program. Program offers new homes at reduced prices and rents to eligible families. Application deadline is July 31. For more information, call 410-313-6318 or go to

Children's services

The CARE Center for Child and Adolescent Resources provides free information to Howard County parents to find services and programs in the community for children and teens. Staff will help families identify their needs and give information to find solutions to their problems. Resource and referral information can cover areas such as community services, recreation and sports, financial assistance, support groups, drug or alcohol abuse, youth development, child care programs and others.

Football and cheerleading

The Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks is accepting registrations for Warhawks flag and tackle football and cheerleading.

Flag football for ages 5-6 is $85; tackle football, ages 7-14 is $160; cheerleading, ages 5-14 is $125. Practice begins in August at Mount View Middle School, 12101 Woodford Drive in Marriottsville.

Tackle football participants are placed on teams based on age and weight.

Volunteer needed

AT:LAST Inc. is seeking an Americorps worker to serve as a volunteer coordinator for a 20-hour per week, 11-month position starting in September. Benefits include a stipend, money for college, insurance and extensive training. E-mail communi for information. Deadline is Aug. 1.

Adult softball leagues

The Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks is accepting registration for its fall softball leagues. Play begins Aug. 16. Categories include men's "D" division games every night except Saturdays, a women's Tuesday division, and Co-Rec "C" and "D" division games on Wednesday, Thursday or Friday. Cost is $680 for a 14-game season. Fees include officials, game balls, sanction fees, awards, playoff field reservation and lights.
